I mean health insurance

I have Veterinary Pet Insurance. I’ve had it for 5 years. I have a Jack Russel Terrier. I pay $25.00 a month for full coverage (except for routine care). Unfortunately I’ve had to use it 3 times. Once for a pit bull attack on my dog. Her bill was 1300. I had the vet fill the form out (I took a copy of the claim form w/me), he signed it and they faxed it right to VPI from the vets office. I had to pay everything up front (put it on my credit card) and I got back 956.00 in two weeks. I has never taken more than two weeks for the claim checks to come. My monthly amount has never gone up. I get the money taken out of my account automatically. Sometimes I forget my dog has insurance.

Either PETA or HSUS has come out with pet insurance. I can’t remember which one. The last time I checked it wasn’t available in Florida yet. That was a year ago.

Some of the ratings for some companies will surprise you.

When it comes to choosing one pet insurance plan over another, there are really no absolutes. But the big “if” is this: Do you know what you are getting? Some companies do not do a good job of telling you what you’re buying and, after you make a claim, you may be in for a shock. Transparency and being upfront are critical when buying insurance because insurance is a “promise to pay” – can you trust that promise?

Based on my experience, I’d put my money in a rainy day fund. I rescued a kitty and decided to get insurance. For 1 6mo old kitten it was just under $300/yr for a plan that was in the middle – not the least coverage and not the most. It’s less expensive the younger the cat is and you do get discounts for multiple pets. Based on my claims, I got back a little over $100. One big issue is all of the exclusions to the plans – read the fine print closely. I was a newbie cat owner and didn’t appreciate all of the exclusions. That’s costing me $2500 as my kitten needs knee surgery that’s not covered – NO MATTER WHAT THE CAUSE. go figure. I’ve also heard that if your cat gets diagnosed with diabetes, for example, the next year it’s can be considered a pre-existing condition and not be covered unless you’re paying the premium for a comprehensive package. It’s not worth it to me.
